Last Tuesday we visited the winner of CoolSchools Rotterdam 2008/9 together with Wiert-Jan de Raaf, Program Director of Rotterdam Climate Initiative.
Group 7 of the Montessorischool Kralingen has been the most succesfull in selling energy efficient products of all participating schools. They will go to the concert of Ali B. and have a backstage meeting with him. The students have raised over €1,100 for their school. This amount will be doubled by the city of Rotterdam, as is also the case for the numbers 2 and 3. The schools will use this extra money to implement energy saving measures in the building.
The last several weeks more then 1,100 students have participated in the program. Together they have succeeded in pursuading over 1,600 households to switch to energy efficient lightbulbs, watersaving showerheads and other energy saving items. By doing so they have not only helped save people money but also reduce the cities CO2 emmissions by over 200 ton annually. In comparison: that's over 1,2 million kilometres in an average car.
CoolSchools isn't just fun and learningfull for the students but because of the increased participation of the Rotterdam population also very relevant for the goals of the Rotterdam Climate Initiative on the topics of climate and energy efficiency.
