In recent weeks, we have been hard at work on the realisation of the CoolSchools programme in Rotterdam. We have been teaching lessons in Rotterdam primary schools about the warming of the Earth, why this is important and what you can do about it, together with a number of climate ambassadors trained and equipped especially by us,. You can find more about the content of the programme here.
It is a lot of fun but also challenging to involve the pupils in this in an appealing manner. The clear difference in backgrounds, knowledge levels and mastery of the Dutch language play an important role. In view of the responses of pupils and teachers, however, we seem to be hitting the right notes!
The coordinating teacher of OMBS de Mare, Mr. Lammert Bakker, expressed it as follows:
“After following three lessons, presented each time to 90 children at the De Mare public primary school in Rotterdam, I have come to the following conclusion. The lessons have an extremely good structure. From the introduction, which grabs the attention immediately, the lesson moves seamlessly on to the content. The content is presented at a good level and is clear enough for the children, which means that the lesson objective is achieved.
The presentation has a good pace, which means that the children's attention remains properly focused for a long time. This is due, among other things, to the unexpected but welcome changes of direction. The lessons are supported by modern teaching techniques. The pupils and the teachers therefore experienced the lessons as being extremely valuable.”
