In 2008 the total global investments in renewable energy were greater then those in fossil energy. A total of 140 billion dollars was invested in sustainable energy production against 110 billion dollars in traditional, fossil energy production. Wind energy was the great winner with 50 billion dollars in invested capital. These figures were released by the UNEP.
Especially Spain, Germany and the U.K. invested a lot in renewable energy, followed by the U.S. and China. UNEP has also released figures on the estimated investements to reduce the emmissions of greenhouse gasses. Investments must climb up to 500 billion dollars in 2020 to be succesfull. The next climate summit in Copenhagen must be the stage where the foundation for this goal must be realized.
