New wake-up call in the making?

In 2006 the public awareness on climate change was boosted by Al Gore's 'The unconvenient truth'. Since then governments and businessess have started to some (cautious) steps to head for a more sustainable society. Yet real impactfull measures have not been taken and the public has lost the level of interest that was present in 2006. The financial crisis is much more important as it seems.

It looks like nature has an unpleasant surprise for us in the coming years what will most likely bring global warming back into the spotlights. According to a recent NASA study there is an increase in solar activity which will coincide with a new El Nino period. Both natural phenomena will amplify man-made warming of our planet and it is very likely we will be getting new record breaking temperatures. Not a pleasant forecast.

Natural variablities like the solarcycle and El Nino have existed for ages and system Earth can deal with this. But if humans add another degree or so by burning fossil fuels we will be tipping the system over an edge on which there is no return.

Icentials means the essence of ice. Earth needs the two cooling elements at the poles to maintain a habitable and stable climate for mankind to flourish. What the projected extra warming will mean for the polar regions is speculation but it will certainly not do any good. If we do not drastically cut greenhouse gas emmissions soon we will be putting sociey itself at risk. Lets hope that the coming wake-up call will give us the collective sense of urgency that we need to act fast and decisively.
