The 10th edition of the Dutch 'National Sustainability Convention' was held on November 11th. This yearly event is the largest in its kind and showcases many aspects of sustainability. Numerous business cases and new developments where shown. This year's edition had 'change' as central theme and was fuly sold out with 700 participants.
Marc Cornelissen closed off the day with a plenary lecture where he talked about change from an Arctic perspective. This vast world of snow and ice appears robust and permanent but nothing could be further from the truth. The amount of sea ice is declining quickly and the Arctic region is undergoing a rapid and profound change. Who thinks this is merely a local challenge is wrong. The Arctic region is a very important stabalizing factor in the world's climate system and the region's warming will have serious global impacts.
Marc used a number of pictures that showed the stunning beauty of the region and graphics that emphasized the scientic background of his story to tell the attendees what consequences our actions here have for the region there. The public showed much appreciation for his lecture afterwards and said that they where motivated even stronger to make their contribution to a more sustainable world.
