By taking part in the viral GreenFinger campaign, you can show what you personally want to protect against climate change. You do this by making your index finger green and writing your message in the palm of your hand. This photo can be entered on the special GreenFinger website. All the photos will be made prominently visible in December 2009 at the UN climate summit in Copenhagen.
The campaign has a low threshold and makes a complex global theme simple and personal. Everyone can take part. According to the most recent scientific insights, the results of the UN summit will be more important than ever. The coming decade will be a make-or-break one in terms of keeping the increase in the average temperature on Earth under 2° Celsius. Above this critical threshold value, the Earth itself will further increase the warming, and irreversible effects can be expected.
For the time being, the current emissions of greenhouse gases are running ahead of the most pessimistic scenario that the UN sketched out in its last climate report. The necessary emission reductions and supplementary policy measures therefore demand a strong, worldwide coalition and an extremely robust and ambitious implementation plan. This requires political courage, vision and leadership.
