In the spring of 2009, we implemented the CoolSchools programme at a large number of primary schools in Rotterdam. After the success in Alkmaar, this exceptional initiative is now getting Rotterdam pupils actively involved in the theme of climate change in an appealing manner.
CoolSchools is making children in years 7 and 8 aware, in a playful but educative way, of the challenges which are occurring as a result of climate change. They are being introduced to this complex theme in an accessible manner, with a special, interactive climate lesson by a guest teacher.
But the programme goes further: in addition to raising awareness, the children are also given the resources to ensure that their surroundings use energy in a smarter way. For example, all the participants are given two energy-saving light bulbs to take home, in order to make a difference there as well, and those who are interested go around the neighbourhood selling energy-saving items to local residents. This way they are making an active contribution to making their own environment more sustainable. The money they earn is used for energy-saving measures at school. In other words, it allows you to kill several birds with one stone. And furthermore, there is a really cool prize to be won by the school which sells the most!
CoolSchools is an initiative of the Alkmaar student and climate ambassador Lars de Keijser, and is supported by the Rotterdam Climate Initiative and the Municipality of Rotterdam.
